Families in the northern Syrian camps suffer from low levels of hygiene that contribute to the spread of outbreaks which requires urgent intervention especially in light of the spread of COVID-19. A large project was launched with the aim of increasing the level of hygiene in the following camps: Afamia, Al-Baraka, Saed, Shuhada AlJanoub, Al-Eis, Al-Burj, Al-Yamamah, Al-Saleem, Jabal Al-Hoss, Ajyal, AlAbyad AlQadeem, AlAbyad AlJadeed, AlNajma, Wadi Al-Ain, Tajamu Al-Sahara, Al-Musa, Sher Maghar, Al Muqlaa, Al Saqia, Al Youssef, and Nahnu Maen in the following areas: Al Dana, Kafr Lusin, Babsqa, Sarmada, Batbo, Hazano, Kafr Daryan Termanin, and Burj Al Namra.
The Project will provide the following services:
-Supplying sterilized water through tanks.
-removal of solid waste.
-removal of sewage pits.
-Distribution of personal hygiene baskets.
-Periodic health awareness campaigns.
-Distribution of garbage containers.
-Building blocks of regular bathrooms and bathrooms suitable for people with special needs.
-Hiring workers to clean the bathroom blocks on a daily basis.
-paving roads.
-Implementing sewage lines with fermentation pits that convert the water into irrigation water.
The project was launched at the beginning of this year and has contributed to overall hygiene through the following:
- Ensuring a clean water supply, removing sewage pits and solid waste removal, and awareness campaigns on a daily basis. The camp Nahnu Maen was added to the camps receiving the services.
-Finishing the distribution of 591 garbage containers to the targeted camps.
-Finishing the distribution of 524 water tanks, with a capacity of 1000 liters, with a concrete base, to ensure the safety of the beneficiaries.
-Finishing the distribution of hygiene baskets in the targeted camps. 8050 families have been reached and 224 baskets are being prepared to be distributed in the camp Nahnu Maen.
– Reaching 12802 beneficiaries through health awareness sessions at the end of September through a total of 1,004 sessions in the camps, which targeted families of all ages, focusing mainly on the issue of promoting personal hygiene, raising awareness on preventive measures to prevent COVID-19 infections, water safety, and safe disposal of solid waste.
– implementing sewage networks, and pavement of roads, with the construction of bathroom blocks within the targeted camps in the project. Sewage services have been completed in the following camps: Al-Maqlaa, Al-Harsh, Al-Baraka, Al-Abyad, Kafr Karmin, and Shuhada Al-Janoub.
-Distribution of bathroom cleaning equipment to 74 cleaning workers in the targeted camps.
Work is underway to pave roads in the camps of Al-Maqla, Al-Harsh, Al-Abyad, Kafr Karmin, Jabal Al-Hoss, Sa’ed, Al-Baraka, Shuhada AlJanoub, Al-Najma, Wadi Al-Ain, Sher Maghar, Al-Musa, Al-Eis, and Al-Burj with a completion rate of 97%
The implementation of blocks of bathrooms in the camps is 99% completed with a planned number of 156 double public bathrooms for males and females and 28 blocks for people with special needs.
Based on the latest update since the start of the project until now, the number of beneficiaries of these services has reached 48,142 individuals (8360 families). It is scheduled to continue providing services until the end of 2021 and is expected to:
-increase personal hygiene levels and eliminate the flow of water to the streets, which leads to the formation of swamps containing diseases.
-Take advantage of the water coming out of the coagulation pit to irrigate the neighboring agricultural lands.
-Reduce the prevalence of diseases in the camps.
These services are expected to contribute to:
-Enhancing personal hygiene by providing sterilized water, removing waste and reducing the spread of diseases and epidemics.
-Supporting families with limited income, widows, and people with special needs.
-Raising awareness of beneficiaries of the need to increase levels of hygiene.
-Reducing the pressures experienced by the displaced and camp residents.
– Supporting the camps’ infrastructure through the construction and maintenance of bathroom blocks, establishing a sewage system, and paving roads.
